Few words about Morcote

The typical narrow streets, arcades of the old patrician houses, architectural monuments of great value and a lush subtropical vegetation make Morcote “the pearl of Lake Lugano.” Located just 10 km south of Lugano the village retains its historical intimacy and its ancient beauty thanks to the fact that the entire historical center is only accessible on foot. Of considerable artistic and cultural interest, as well as architectural, are the Church of Santa Maria del Sasso, the cemetery in terraces, the monumental staircase and the Captain’s Tower, the last bastion together with the Castle (now private property) of the old fortifications. The botanical Scherrer, also known as “the garden of wonders,” alone deserves a visit. The park is rich in lush subtropical vegetation and buildings and works of art of various kinds from all over the world. It was left to the town of Morcote by Scherrer’s widow in 1965, with the explicit desire to open it to the public. This Eden, set in an impressive world of subtropical flora including palm trees, camellias, wisteria, oleander, cedar, cypress, camphor, eucalyptus, magnolias, azaleas, oranges, lemons, bamboo and many species of flowering plants odorous, attracts and enchants every visitor.
